The Antofagasta Region in Atacama desert (Chile) is full of volcanoes. There, you can see remains of magma all over the place as a reminder of big eruptions in the past.

It's a harsh place, dry, at high altitude. Life is hard there. But you can see vicuñas, vizcachas, flamingos and foxes from time to time.
Besides those features, to be there surrounded by extinguished volcanoes is a mindblowing experience. You can perceive a lot of peace and tranquility. Specially when you're standing in front of the altiplanic lagoons between the big cones, and the silence invades you.
Those lagoons where of big matter for Incas and Licanantay people in order to use the reflect of the stars in the water to study the seasonal changes and (if I remember well) various astronomic studies.

Lascar is the most active volcano in the region, with records of eruptions going back to 1848. It is composed of two separate cones with several summit craters. The westernmost crater of the eastern cone is presently active. Volcanic activity is characterized by constant release of volcanic gas and occasional vulcanian eruptions.

I had the chance to climb Lascar, see the active crater and feel the harsh effects of high altitude (5,592 m).
